DAILY SHOW Co-Creator Lizz Winstead Talks Starting in Comedy and Lady Parts Justice League

Did you know The Daily Show was created by two women? The show, which has been hosted by the likes of Craig Kilborn, Jon Stewart, and Trevor Noah, may not have a huge female presence in front of the camera, but its very existence is owed to Madeleine Smithberg and Lizz Winstead.

These women ostensibly changed the way the world looks at comedy and politics and the intersection thereof. So, naturally, we were champing at the bit to talk to Winstead—especially after we heard about her non-profit organization, Lady Parts Justice League, a self-described “a coven of hilarious badass feminists who use humor and pop culture to expose the haters fighting against reproductive rights” that’s “Inclusive,” “Intersectional” and “Fun as F***.”

So we sent comedian and Fangirling correspondent Sarah Hartshorne to Winstead’s feminist sleeper cell to discuss her comedian origin story,  political correctness in comedy, and bridging what the two mean to her with Lady Parts Justice League.

Like what you saw there? Interested in more discussions with, by, and about women, where everyone—yes, everyone (and yes, even you!)—is invited to nerd out about science and culture, talk about what matters, learn new things, geek out over history, meet awesome ladies, and feel all your myriad feelings from a decidedly different point of view? Well let me go out on a limb and say Fangirling is for you! And this season, we have a heaping helping of everything you could want, every Wednesday on Alpha.

Besides, you’re not going to want to miss our fabulous guests—we’ve got Phoebe Robinson talking Game of Thrones in the Khaleesi Korner, Blue Planet II producer Orla Doherty, and a spotlight on artist Jen Bartel—or our regular segments like “Worst Advice” and “Real Fake Spoilers”!

So, really, you have no excuse. And why would you want to miss this? Get yourself in on the guilt-free fangirlsplosion with the hashtag #FangirlingIsBack and sign up for a free month of Alpha with the code ‘fangirling’! Because who says being smart and having a lot of feelings are mutually exclusive?

And, did you know you can buy your own piece of the Fangirling set art with part of the proceeds benefitting Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund? It’s TRUE! Click here if you’re an Alpha member or here if you’re just a regular Nerdist stan!
