Here’s another reason to move to Los Angeles (aside from the perfect weather and movie stars): the first fall 2014 Live Read event for Film Independent at LACMA has been announced, and we are excited for the first film that director Jason Reitman has chosen. On Thursday, October 16th, Reitman, and a yet unannounced cast will perform American Beauty. Previous readings have included Reservoir Dogs, Groundhog Day, American Pie, Boogie Nights, Tootsie, Raising Arizona, The Princess Bride, His Girl Friday, Glengarry Glen Ross, The Usual Suspects and The Big Lebowski.Â
One of the coolest things about the Live Read series is its poster art, created by Matt Owen. Reitman actually discovered the minimalist artist at a Crazy 4 Cult show at Gallery 1988 in 2010. He was so enamored with Owen’s prints that he purchased one for his father and came back to ask if he could repurpose it for the Live Read. Owen and Reitman have been working together ever since.
Creating art for the Live Read events is a dream come true for the film fanatic. “I hardly ever go back and rewatch the films,â Owen told Film Independent. âI want to be in same mindset as audience. All the films are so iconic already, theyâre already in the public psyche[…]My job is to try to make a connection, to give someone that aha moment when they see the poster.â
Here’s a look at the gorgeous posters that Owen has created in the past, and the newest poster to be added to the collection, American Beauty.
