There’s a Live-Action VOLTRON Movie in the Works at Universal

Few animated series have retained such a fervent and vocal fan base as Voltron, the Americanized version of two separate anime, Beast King GoLion and later Armored Fleet Dairugger XV. Despite being 32 years old (like a certain writer whose name is me), the show about a team of astronauts piloting robots that join to form the defender of the galaxy is just as beloved today, rejuvenated by DreamWorks Animation and Netflix’s Voltron: Legendary Defender. Now fans might get to see more of Voltron, and in a decidedly more real-world way, because Universal has a live-action Voltron movie in the works.

The news comes from Deadline‘s Mike Fleming Jr., who confirmed that, because of a recent deal between Universal and DreamWorks Animation, the former has inherited a live-action adaptation of the property. Nerdist has reached out to Universal for further comment but they had nothing more to share at this time.

Currently, a script is being worked on by David Hayter, whom fans will know from having written the first two X-Men films and Zack Snyder‘s Watchmen, as well as doing a ton of video game voices including Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid franchise from 1998 to 2010.

While there’s certainly no guarantee a movie will actually be made, it’s super cool to realize that one is in the cards. Universal would do well to capitalize on such a franchise, especially given Lionsgate will soon have its own young-pilots-inside-a-giant-mech with Power Rangers. Plus, with the love of the brand and the current spate of space-bound action flicks, a movie about intergalactic heroes fighting off an alien menace could tick all the right boxes.

And if a Voltron feature film has any of the fun, excitement, and heart of Legendary Defender, then I think we’d be well and truly awed. Let us know your thoughts on a possible Voltron live action movie in the comments below!
