Live-Action SUPERGIRL Series Lands at CBS

Well, it finally happened: Supergirl is getting her own series. According to Deadline, CBS has committed to a series for the DC Comics character, who’ll be headlining her own series for the first time.

Now I wonder if she’ll still be Superman’s cousin.

Earlier this month, we reported that Arrow and The Flash show creator Greg Berlanti was shopping a Supergirl pitch around with No Ordinary Family‘s Ali Adler. Apparently, CBS looked at the TV landscape filled with DC characters and decided they wanted in on that action.

Created all the way back in 1959, in her most commonly-used origin, Supergirl is Kara Zor-El. Kara’s the sole survivor of Argo City, a Kryptonian colony which survived the destruction of the home planet, before meeting its radioactive doom while drifting in space. Kara’s super-scientist parents put her in a rocket and send her to Earth. Here, she tried to juggle her superhero identity and life as a student, all the while dealing with her occasionally passive-aggressive cousin.

Maybe the character’s biggest pop culture moment in the past was the uh… not-great 1984 movie starring Helen Slater. The character’s other major live-action incarnation was on Smallville, where she was played by Laura Vandervoort and spent a lot of time punking her cousin.

This would make Supergirl the only solo superheroine show on TV right now (at least, while we wait for more information on Netflix/Marvel’s planned Jessica Jones series). iZombie is more of a supernatural procedural, and efforts to get Wonder Woman on the small screen have stalled out repeatedly over the years.

So now the big question: who do we think will play Kara Zor-El on the small screen?
