“Let’s get down to business, to defeat the Huns!” It’s been twenty years since Disney’s Mulan arrived in theaters and into our hearts. The live-action Mulan is on track for a 2020 release with Liu Yifei as Fa Mulan. Disney has already teased the first look at Yifei in costume, and now additional details about the Mulan reboot are making the rounds and causing quite a stir online. Today’s Nerdist News draws swords to tell you what the rumors mean for Disney’s latest live-action adaptation.
Join host Jessica Chobot as she shares some good news about Mulan. While director Niki Caro had previously said the remake wouldn’t have the signature tunes of the original, fan site The Disinsider reports the movie will “feature some of the music” from the animated film. Additionally, they report Mulan’s spirit guide, Mushu, is also slated to be in the film. They cite an inside source, but you should take this rumor with a Mushu-sized grain of salt.
“I’ll Make a Man Out of You” is one of our favorite songs from the animated classic, but who would sing it in the new film if it appears? One of the bigger changes of the remake is that Captain Li Shang won’t be appearing at all. Instead, Yoson An’s Chen Honghui is Mulan’s friend, ally, and love interest in the latest retelling.
Mulan may not even be fighting the Huns in this incarnation. Instead, Memoirs of a Geisha actress Gong Li is portraying “a powerful witch,” who will serve as the film’s primary villain. That sounds like a more fantastical take on the story, but we’ll have to wait two years to see how it plays on screen.
