Live-Action DEATH NOTE Trailer Provides a First Look at Ryuk the Shinigami

The biggest question we were left with after our first brief look at Netflix’s Death Note, a film based on the hit anime of the same name, back in March: What will Willem Dafoe look like as Ryuk, a creepy-looking and -sounding god of death known as a shinigami? At last, that mystery has been solved in the new full-length trailer for the movie… sort of.

We get to actually see Ryuk, although in the shots he’s in, he’s either in the dark, with his glowing red eyes poking through the veil of black, or obscured and out of focus. Maybe that’s a good thing, though: While the anime sort of humanized Ryuk pretty quickly (he was even goofy at times), it looks like the movie is going to focus on making Ryuk a more scary and menacing character, which makes sense given his nature.

Beware, anime and potential movie spoilers ahead:

This also prompts the question: What is the movie actually going to be about? This Americanized retelling takes place in Seattle and Light’s pop star girlfriend is now more of an everyday person, but beyond those changes, how true to the source will Death Note be? Based on what we’ve seen, it looks like the movie will focus on the first half of the anime, before the death of investigator L.

That’s the most interesting arc from the anime, so that’s fair, but does this mean Mello and Near, L’s successors, won’t be in the movie? That wouldn’t be farfetched, since L’s arc ought to be plenty to fill one movie. Still, Mello and Near could be an interesting pair of antagonists, so perhaps they’d be around for a potential sequel?

There’s a lot to digest, so let us know in the comments what you want to see in the Death Note movie.
