Listen to Kurt Cobain’s Heartbreaking Track, “Sappy”

Kurt Cobain was a man of mystery, though we’ve been able to uncover certain bits and pieces about him since his tragic death, twenty-one years ago. The documentary, Montage of Heck, provided a welcome glimpse into Cobain’s struggles with addiction, illness, fame and love. But perhaps what was most exciting, is that during the filming, director Brett Morgen unearthed a whole bunch of Cobain’s home recordings. And now, a 13-track Kurt Cobain solo album is set to be released on November 13 under the name Montage of Heck: The Home Recordings. If you can’t wait that long, don’t worry. We’ve got a delicious taste of the record right here.

“Sappy” is an early demo version of the Nirvana rarity, and it’s been polished up for the record. Take a listen, and let the tender grittiness in Cobain’s voice gently wash over you. The song is characteristically dark, with the lyrics expressing a kind of sadness and yearning that is present in the very best Nirvana tracks, “and if you save yourself, you will make him happy, he’ll keep you in a jar, and you’ll think you’re happy.” It’s a must-listen for fans of Cobain, Nirvana, and music that effortlessly forges an emotional connection with the listener.

If you like the song, it will also be released in November on a special 7″, along with Cobain’s cover of The Beatles’ “And I Love Her”.
