Listen to Benicio Del Toro’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Mixtape

If you’ve seen Guardians of the Galaxy – and even if you haven’t seen it yet – you understand how integral the role of music is in to the film. When “Hooked on a Feeling” starts pumping through Star-Lord’s Walkman headphones and the theater speakers, it isn’t just to add a layer of kitschy value; it’s part of the film’s emotional core. Without spoiling anything, each of the film’s splendidly curated tracks not only add to the movie’s diegetic value, but give the film a throughline of sorts that I haven’t seen on screen in quite some time.

While I was busy getting every other actor in Guardians of the Galaxy to give me their best “I am Groot” impressions, I had a chance to sit down with The Collector himself, Benicio Del Toro, and our conversation took a turn for the musical. Specifically, I asked him what would be on his Awesome Mixtape, Vol. 1, and little did I know how enthusiastic his response would be.

Naturally, I put together a little Spotify playlist of what might be on Del Toro’s Awesome Mixtape for your listening pleasure.

A few notes: a couple artists he mentioned weren’t available on Spotify and I wasn’t about to subject you to some cover band. Also, off-camera, Del Toro mentioned Morrissey, hence the closing track (and my undying love for Morrissey).

What would be on your Awesome Mixtape, Vol. 1? Share with us in the comments below or tell me on Twitter.

Love.  So much love.  My mixed tape would have to have some NIN and one of my first music crushes: The Wallflowers.  Oh yes.
