Despite a well-received run at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse in 2015, the musical based on Disneyâs The Hunchback of Notre Dame is not coming to Broadway. But there is a very impressive original cast soundtrack for The Hunchback of Notre Dame which will be released in just a few days!
To give fans a taste of what to expect from the new album, Disney Broadway has released a video of Michael Arden singing âOut There,â one of the signature songs from the 1996 animated The Hunchback of Notre Dame. There are even some comic book connections on this album. DCâs Legends of Tomorrow cast member Ciara Renée portrayed Esmeralda in this production, while Spider-Man: Turn off the Darkâs Patrick Page played Dom Claude Frollo.
This production actually dates back to 1999, when it was produced in Germany as Der Glöckner von Notre Dame. That version was fairly faithfully translated back into English 14 years later, and itâs closer in tone to Victor Hugoâs novel than the Disney movie. In other words, donât expect cute cartoon gargoyles or a true happy ending. The Hunchback of Notre Dame was always supposed to be a tragedy, which only adds to its power.
The book for the Hunchback musical was written by Peter Parnell, with new songs and music created by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz in addition to the music they wrote for the Disney film two decades ago.
Ghostlight Records will release the The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Studio Cast Recording) on January 22 on iTunes and on a CD that comes with a 32-page booklet with an introduction from Menken, full lyrics and photos.
