If you thought this Lin-Manuel Miranda fella was just a flash in the pan, having a moment thanks to a bit of Broadway ballyhooâthink again. The multi-hyphenate superstar got himself imbued with Disney movie magic this year with Moana, and will take it all one step further with a foray into adapting The Kingkiller Chronicle into not only a film, but also a TV series and stage production. Because what fun is it to only make ONE of those things at a time?
The Hamilton creator has been tasked by Lionsgate to usher in a multi-level, cross-platform adaptation of Pat Rothfuss’ fantasy series, a faux autobiography chronicling the life of Kvothe, a world-class musician, scholar, and adventurer who spends his days as an anonymous innkeeper in a rural area.
But even that description is putting it lightlyâThe Kingkiller Chronicles are truly expansive in every sense of the word. There are literally hundreds of characters and settings spread out across myriad times and places specific to Kvothe’s history. (In what should be a surprise to no one, Rothfuss worked on some of his supplemental materials with A Song of Ice and Fire creator George R.R. Martin.)
Needless to say, we’re pretty excited about it.
Miranda is slated to, according to Deadline, produce the feature film and TV series adaptations of the fantasy franchiseâthough there’s no word in their write-up on the state of the game that was originally tied to Lionsgate’s rights deal. There is also an option regarding future stage productions of the story (hence why they went with Miranda, no doubt), with Miranda composing the original music and songs should that aspect of the adaptation moves forward.
There’s already a writer on board for the film adaptationâLindsey Beer (Transformers 5)âwith plans for the drama TV series to expand the universe beyond the books. The film script will be based on the first book, The Name of the Wind, published in 2007. Miranda and Rothfuss will be intimately involved in the development of the new characters and storylines explored in the TV show, Lionsgate said in making the announcement today.
