Netflix has revealed a clip from its Death Note adaptation at Comic-Con. In it, Light (Nat Wolff) meets Ryuk the Shinigami (Willem Dafoe) for the first time. Ryuk, as befitting of a death god, promptly convinces Light to write the name of a bully in the Death Note, ensuring the boy’s death. Netflix has taken some liberties with the source material, setting the adaptation in America rather than Japan, but the central story and characters seem to be intact. Ryuk is suitably terrifying, too, alternating between menacing and flippant in a truly unsettling way.
Netflix’s Death Note premiers August 25th.
