LEGO STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Video Starts Way in the Past

In the dark times, when my love of Star Wars had reached its nadir thanks to the prequels, two things pulled me back to the light: one was The Clone Wars cartoon series and its complex storytelling, and the other was the LEGO Star Wars video games and its rampant silliness while still retelling the compelling story of the saga. Now we’re in a time when Star Wars is back on top and it feels great! Not only with the movies, but Star Wars Rebels on TV and now LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens coming to our consoles. But it’s much more than just that one movie we’ll get to play.

IGN has released a video of the first 15 minutes of the game, but you aren’t going to find Rey, Finn, or Kylo Ren in there at all; the game’s prologue is the Battle of Endor from Return of the Jedi, following Han, Leia, Chewie, the droids, and the ewoks as they work to take down the shield generator which powers the second Death Star. Prior to the playable level, we get cinematics with Luke’s introduction to the Emperor, and Lando and Admiral Ackbar (“It’s a trap!” because of course it is). Have a look below!

Not only does the level offer a bit of extra playtime for a game which has exactly one new movie from which to work, but it draws a more direct connection between Han, Leia, Luke, and the death of Vader to the plight of the next generation of heroes and villains. Plus, it’s a great way to play a level that was never playable in the other games.

On top of this prologue, complete with all the charm and enjoyment we expect from a LEGO game, IGN also released a quick video of a mini-game you’ll be able to play in the game. This one is an awesome 8-bit, side-scrolling escape in the Millennium Falcon from the hand-puppet worm living in the asteroid.

LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens looks to be another great addition to the franchise, and a hoot to play. I can’t wait to get my hands on it when it’s released on Tuesday, June 28! Let me know what you’re looking forward to most with it in the comments below!

Since we’re here, enjoy some character info for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story:
