Fan Creates Faithfully (Expensive) Reproduction of THE LEGO MOVIE Submarine

One of the more delightful entertainment surprises of the last few years has been The LEGO Movie franchise. What, on paper, sounded like a soulless cash grab turned out to be one of the sharpest and most emotionally resonant family films in recent memory. Yet despite a healthy box office and critical acclaim, LEGO didn’t really dive into branding iconic moments and sets from the film. Sure, a handful of LEGO sets were released, but nothing on par with some of the complex creations from the film. Luckily, that’s where fans come in.

Redditor uitslover has created what they call a “99% movie accurate model” of the most complex vehicle in The LEGO Movie: the Master Builder’s Submarine. Using official still images and a 3D model of the submarine from The LEGO Movie video game, uitslover first used Lego’s Stud.io computer program to see if the project was even feasible. Once they were satisfied it wasn’t a physics-defying build, they shared the blueprint with the world. The current model stands at 29″ in length, 20.8″ in height, and 8.2″ in width. To put that in perspective, it’s about the same size as a toddler lying on her back while holding a rainbow.

If you want to build your own Master Builder Submarine, it will take 3,341 pieces to complete. At this time, the model only recreates the outer shell of the vehicle. It does not open up to show a panorama of the ship’s interior, though uitslover is working on it.

Once Stud.io releases their instruction maker, uitslover plans to release step-by-step instructions for the Master Builder Submarine. They estimate the current cost to be between $545 and $761 USD.

Oh. So maybe that’s why LEGO didn’t make an official version.
