THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: OCARINA OF TIME Gets Covered with an Ocarina

Nearly twenty years ago, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time hit the Nintendo 64 and quickly earned its place among the greatest video games of all time. One of the many reasons that the game has endured in the collective imaginations of gamers is the way that music played an important role in the game itself. Specifically, players had to learn several songs on an ocarina in order to advance. That’s why it’s fitting that one of the newest covers for the game’s title theme was performed with a real ocarina!

Jillian Aversa and Kate Covington (a.k.a Erutan) have released their joint cover of Koji Kondo’s unforgettable title theme for The Legend of Zelda: Orcarina of Time. For this video, Aversa provided the vocals and cosplayed as a few mystical creatures, while Covington played the ocarina and appeared as a few surreal creatures herself.

The arrangement was a collaboration between Jillian and her husband, Andrew Aversa. On her YouTube page, Aversa wrote that this was “one of the first pieces of video game music that struck me in my youth,” before adding that she wanted to have a “freer interpretation” of Zelda’s world for this video. “When I think of the Zelda games, I don’t just picture Link and Zelda, but the whole world of Hyrule — with all its magic and charm,” explained Aversa. “What does this world look like from the perspective of the critters that inhabit it? That is the question that inspired our video concept. Kate and I each play three different animal characters, all coming together to witness the metamorphosis of a moth.”

Because of personal reasons, Aversa had to take a two year break from releasing her music cover videos. Back in 2015, she premiered her rendition of “Zelda’s Lullaby,” from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.
