Learn Geographic Lessons With Hellogoodbye’s ‘I Wanna See The States’

PBS isn’t necessarily known for being a hotbed of musical talent, but with their newly formed LearningMedia Digital Innovators program, it appears that the educational network might be offering some pretty kick ass rock tunes… along with valuable lessons about geography!

Hellogoodbye, best known for electro-pop songs like “Here (In Your Arms)” and “Shimmy Shimmy Quarter Turn,” has offered up a musical tour of America for their newest tune, “I Wanna To See The States,” which also happens to act as “an engaging multimedia mapping activity” for students.

Okay, so it’s not the sexiest part of rock ‘n’ roll, but knowledge is power, people!

In the six-minute clip, singer Forrest Kline waxes geographic about all the wonders of these here United States, from the Oregon coast to the pines of Maine. Then, on PBS’s website, there’s a matching lesson plan for the tune, which is intended to teach kids (grades K through 4) how to understand maps, gain spatial perspective and identify geographical regions.

Or, if you still have trouble remembering where those darn Dakotas are, the song can help with that, too. No matter how old you are. No judgment.

This isn’t the first time maps have provided fodder for musicians. In fact, if we were to create a playlist that was inspired by some of our favorite governed entities, it would have to contain some of the following state-inspired songs:

1. Limbeck’s “In Ohio On Some Steps”

2. Phantom Planet’s “California”

3. Sufjan Stevens‘ “Say Yes To Michigan!”

4. Bruce Springsteen‘s “Nebraska”

5. The Kills‘ “What New York Used To Be”

What state songs would you add to the playlist? Tell us in the comments below!
