Leaked Photo Claimed to Show STAR TREK: DISCOVERY’s New Klingons

UPDATE: Comicbook.com is reporting that the original photographer “now claims that the characters shown in the photo may not be Klingons. He only ‘thought they kinda looked like’ Klingons.” They may be hairless Klingons, or another race entirely.

The long-awaited Star Trek: Discovery is finally in production, and it was only a matter of time before we saw some of the new and familiar aliens awaiting on the show. And what would a Star Trek series be without the Klingons? But if the first leak from Discovery‘s set is any indication, the new Klingons may not look like any Klingons that we’ve seen before.

A photo first spotted on The Trek BBS appears to show a group of actors in full alien make up during a break in production. The caption on Andrew MacKay’s instagram post that accompanied the photo was “Hanging out with my new Klingon Crew today on set of the new #StarTrek.”

Assuming the photo is legitimate, we do have to say that the designs are certainly unexpected, if those are in fact Klingons. Their lack of hair and the shape of their heads make them seem even more otherworldly than the Klingons that we’ve become used to. Of course, there may be an in-story explanation for this as well. We know that Discovery is set before the events of the original Star Trek series, and these could be Klingons who have been genetically altered or another subset of the species that we simply haven’t encountered before onscreen. We won’t know for sure until Discovery gets closer to its premiere, but it’s not clear when the show will officially launch on CBS All Access.
