“Makes people dumb.” “Very boring.” “Comedian fool.” “More unpleasant than a diuretic.” “Wee rat face.”
With praise like that, how can you not be excited for the return of Last Week Tonight With John Oliver?
Actually, those all come from the show’s own promo for their upcoming third season, a self-deprecating look at HBO’s long-form comedic news program featuring John Oliver. In the ad he is seated at a spinning desk, in what looks like an empty Matrix-loading program.
The quotes come from targets of the show, like the Wall Street Journal and Donald Trump (and the president of Ecuador…no, really), and the last one comes from Cher.
“Cher said that? Cher said that? The Cher? We’re talking about the actual Cher? There’s only one Cher, right?” We’re pretty sure there is, in fact, only one “Cher,” John.
HBO also released a new poster to go along with the ad, and it proudly announces the show is “back despite popular demand.”
The new promo and poster are funny, but those comments are proud reminders that the show, which takes a deep (and humorous) look at issues that might not always get the depth and attention they deserve, is being noticed by people that would prefer they not have a light shone on them.
Although, I’ve seen every episode they have ever done and I don’t remember exactly what Cher’s problem would be. Maybe she really just loves Bud Light Lime?
The show returns Sunday, February 14th at 11 p.m. on HBO.
