THE LAST OF US: PART II Teaser Drops Us Back Into a Dark Future

Back in 2013, Naughty Dog reinvigorated the survival horror genre with The Last of Us, a riveting tale in which gamers assumed control of Joel, a smuggler whose mission was to escort a young girl named Elle across a dangerous post-apocalyptic wasteland. Fans quickly latched on to the title for its emotionally compelling storytelling and action. Next year, Joel and Ellie will reunite in The Last of Us: Part II. However, neither one of the fan favorite duo appeared in the newest teaser footage from Sony’s Paris Games Week showcase. Instead, we were introduced to three new characters in a very brutal fashion. The video is below, but be warned: the violence and language are pretty intense.

Although the natural assumption is that the young woman seen here is an older Elle, Sony has made it very clear that she is a brand new character who will play a role in Joel and Elle’s latest adventure. And while the Infected do make their presence felt in the closing seconds, it’s the religious fanatics who serve as the major threats in this footage. The fanatics come very close to hanging the young woman, and they brutally break Yara’s arm when she refuses to give up the location of her friend. Going from what we saw and heard in this clip, we think that Yara’s friend is called Lev, and he seems to be pretty good with a bow and arrow. However, it was the team up between the two women that put down the last fanatic.

Ultimately, this teaser offers more questions than answers for fans of the original game. But the cinematic sequence was impressive, and we’re eager to revisit that world when The Last of Us: Part II arrives on the Playstation 4 some time in 2018.
