LAIKA & Focus Features announce Kubo and The Two Strings

There’s a new movie coming from the geniuses behind Coraline, The Boxtrolls and ParaNorman in 2016! Are you excited? We’re excited! LAIKA and Focus Features will bring Kubo and the Two Strings to the big screen on August 19, 2016 as the first movie in a new three picture deal between the two companies. Here’s the full poster which is just so much more beautiful than we can could put into our header:

Kubo and the Two Strings Poster

Here’s what we know already–aside from the fact that it will be gorgeous because do you see that poster art above?! The folks in charge have lined up an award-winning and nominated cast that includes Matthew McConaughey, Charlize Theron, Rooney Mara, Ralph Fiennes, Brenda Vaccaro and Game of Thrones Art Parkinson who will voice Kubo, the young hero and title character. The film will mark the directorial debut of LAIKA President and CEO Travis Knight who is also producing alongside ParaNorman producer Arianne Sutner. The movie is from an original screenplay by Marc Haimes and Chris Butler, also of ParaNorman.

“It’s a story that means something, a story that deserves to be told. In short, it’s a LAIKA movie. And with a poetic script, sublime cast, and our freakishly talented artists and craftspeople, Kubo will be a strange, stirring, and altogether stunning film. I can’t wait to share it with the world,” Knight said in a press release about the film.

The story itself centers on young Kubo who lives a quiet life caring for his mother in a shoreside village in ancient Japan. All that quiet goes to ruin when a spirit from his family’s past finds him and sets him on the run in search of a magical suit of armor that was once worn by his legendary samurai (and deceased) father. With words like “epic fantasy” and “thrilling odyssey” throughout the plot outline, we eagerly anticipate whatever LAIKA can cook up to transport us to this new magical place.

The movie may be more than a year off, but with the poster art, and what we remember of LAIKA’s last few theatrical releases, we’re thinking there’s some crazy potential for a summer blockbuster come 2016. Perhaps there will be gods and monsters sent out to movie fans like they did with ParaNorman? Or delicious Japanese treats will be brought by truck to comic cons around the country in anticipation? We can’t wait to see what they think up!

YAY LAIKA. I love Coraline and ParaNorman; haven’t seen the Boxtrolls yet, but I’ve been really wanting to. I just get so excited to see that they’re still going–claymation is such a gorgeous art form, and I love that they’re doing everything they can to keep it alive.
