Back in the fifth season of Game of Thrones, Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) sent Mace Tyrell (Roger Ashton-Griffiths) to Braavos to get him out of the way while she unleashed the Sparrows on his children, Margaery (Natalie Dormer) and Loras (Finn Jones). Along the way, Cersei crossed the Queen of Thorns herself, Lady Olenna Tyrell (Diana Rigg), and that’s never a good idea!
Entertainment Weekly has debuted a deleted scene from the upcoming Game of Thrones season 6 Blu-ray; which features Lady Olenna’s first scene after discovering what had happened to her grandchildren. This lost moment would have run in the second episode of the season, as Lady Olenna chastised her son for allowing Ceresi to so easily trick him.
It’s unfortunate that the clip was cut for time, as Olenna’s line about Mace’s singing was quite funny, as was his embarrassed reaction. This scene also gave Mace a chance to be more than just a fool when he expressed his genuine concern for his children. Ultimately, Mace shared their fate, leaving Olenna as the sole surviving member of House Tyrell.
The upside is that Lady Olenna went on to make an alliance with Dorne and Lord Varys (Conleth Hill), which will put her firmly on the side of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke). That should lead to some great scenes between Rigg and Clarke in the upcoming season. But what we really want to see is Rigg get at least one more chance to share the stage with Headey’s Cersei, because that’s a reckoning which is long overdue.
Game of Thrones season 6 will be out on Blu-ray and DVD on November 15. The seventh season will premiere in summer 2017.
