Lady Gaga to Pay Tribute to David Bowie at the Grammys

When David Bowie died last month, he left a hole not only in the music industry, but also in the realm of fashion and pop culture, where he was continually a trendsetter and an avant garde presence. At this year’s Grammy Awards ceremony, a tribute will be paid to all of Bowie’s many facets by one of today’s most popular, and oddly dressed, musicians: Golden Globe-winning actress (still weird to say) Lady Gaga.

The longtime producer of the Grammys, Ken Ehrlich, said Gaga was always in the cards to do something for the ceremony, but Bowie’s death gave them an opportunity. He told the New York Times many other artists asked to be involved, “some of whom might have made sense; the vast majority didn’t.” Ultimately they decided the pop singer should do this solo.

It makes a degree of sense; Lady Gaga was an icon of autre fashion when she first hit it big in the mid-2000s, and she certainly had her own breed of pop music that ranged from kitschy to socially aware. She’s currently in her Tony Bennett phase, which could seen as her own Thin White Duke phase…kind of. And obviously, both musicians got into acting to much acclaim.

The segment at the Grammys, which is said to run about six to seven minutes and will encompass “at least three or four” of Bowie’s hits, will have Nile Rodgers as musical director. Rodgers is a famous and accomplished musician and producer who produced Let’s Dance, Bowie’s biggest-selling album, and he even credits Bowie with giving his career a boost after the funk and disco movements died out.

How do you think Lady Gaga will do paying tribute to David Bowie? Who would you have picked? What songs are you hoping get played? Let us know everything in the comments below!
