LABYRINTH Comic Will Reveal Origin of Jareth the Goblin King

In Jim Henson‘s dark classic Labyrinth, Jareth the Goblin King gave a young girl named Sarah 13 hours to make her way through a maze before her infant brother, Toby, would become a goblin forever. There are a lot of stories that can be told in 13 hours, and now Jareth is ready to share his own tale.

Entertainment Weekly (EW) broke the story that Boom! Studios’ Archaia imprint will release an ongoing Labyrinth comic book series by writer Simon Spurrier and artist Daniel Bayliss. The first arc will take place during the film, as Jareth tells Toby how he came to be the ruler of the goblins even though he is a human. This origin story may also shed some light on how and why the goblins claim human children as their own.

According to the EW report, Jareth was born in Venice during the 18th century, and this story will introduce both his mother and father. While the premise for the story suggests that we will see Jareth as a young boy or a teenager, Spurrier also told EW that Jareth’s “[David] Bowie form” would also play a part in the story. Spurrier didn’t tease any stories beyond Jareth’s origin, but the Labyrinth itself could conceivably be used to explore new characters as well as the ones that were introduced in the film. Back in 2006, Tokyopop published a manga sequel, Return to Labyrinth, which featured Toby as a teenager. That could be another potential direction for this comic.

Jim Henson’s Labyrinth #1 will be released in February 2018.
