Will Kylo Ren and Rey Really Team Up in STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI?

The new trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi has been the only thing that we can really think about for the past few days. We’ve noted every Porg, tracked all of the new weapons and ships, as well as the new planets and creatures. But the thing that we keep coming back to is the hint of a dark alliance between Kylo Ren and Rey. Today’s Nerdist News is examining three ways this could potentially play out in The Last Jedi!

There are potential spoilers ahead for The Last Jedi. These are only theories until they aren’t. But if you don’t want to even entertain the idea of where the story is going, then this is your last chance to jump back to hyperspace.

Join host and Canto Bight’s best oddsmaker, Jessica Chobot, as she takes us through some intriguing story possibilities. The middle films of each of the previous Star Wars trilogy have at least partially dealt with a Sith master attempting to get a young Jedi to renounce his teachings and join him. Count Dooku made a half-hearted attempt to get Obi-Wan Kenobi on his side in Attack of the Clones, while Darth Vader went a lot farther to get Luke Skywalker in Empire Strikes Back.

In a way, it doesn’t matter if Rey and Kylo Ren are siblings, cousins, or their fathers’ brother’s nephew’s cousin’s former roommate’s kid. There does seem to be some kind of bond between them that transcends the traditional light side and dark side of the Force. But that doesn’t mean we think the trailer isn’t trying to mislead us! Rey and Kylo Ren’s exchange seems to be cut together from two different scenes.

However, it doesn’t mean that there won’t be a scene in the movie where Rey and Kylo have a meeting of the minds. If they do join forces, there are at least three ways this could go forward. In the first, Kylo Ren finally rejects the dark side and reclaims his identity as Ben Solo rather than murder his mother, General Leia. That would leave Ben and Rey in the light side. The second scenario is that Rey goes dark and joins Kylo Ren. There is some darkness to Rey, but that seems like an unlikely turn of events.

The third potential outcome is perhaps the most intriguing: Kylo Ren and Rey reject the teachings of their masters to form a new order of Grey Jedi who can call upon the light and the dark side in balance with each other. That really would make Luke the last Jedi as we knew them, and it’s a unique way to send the franchise into the third film of the current trilogy.

Do you think that Rey and Kylo Ren will go grey in The Last Jedi? Let’s discuss in the comment section below!
