Kumail Nanjiani Voices a Very Unconfident Orc in SHADOW OF WAR Video

Later this year, Middle-Earth: Shadow of War will take gamers back into Mordor as Talion and Celebrimbor attempt to use a new ring of power to unseat Sauron as the Lord of the Rings. Along the way, Talion will recruit an orc army to his cause while also making new rivals through the game’s Nemesis system. At Comic-Con, fans learned that Silicon Valley and The Big Sick star Kumail Nanjiani is lending his voice to one of the orcs, and he’s unlike any other enemy in the game.

Warner Bros. Interactive has posted a new Shadow of War video that features Nanjiani recording his lines as the Agonizer, an orc who is simultaneously a dangerous foe and hopelessly neurotic. If the clips are any indication, the Agonizer has at least a basic understanding of using humor as a weapon. But within the moment, he can’t quite pull it off.

“My character is an orc,” explained Nanjiani in the clip. “What’s different about him is that he wants to be badass and he wants to be cool, but he really second guesses himself and he overthinks everything…He writes these insults, and then in the moment, he’s not sure if they’re good or if he can commit to them.”

There’s something inherently funny about the idea of an orc taking the time to create his own cool lines but lacking the comedic chops to pull it off. And while the video presents the Agonizer as Talion’s foe, we have to wonder if he will also be available as a potential ally as well, given Talion’s ability to forcibly convert orcs into his followers. We’ll find out more when Middle-Earth: Shadow of War hits on October 10.

What do you think about Nanjiani’s new role as the Agonizer? Let’s discuss in the comment section below!
