KINGDOM HEARTS III Gameplay Trailer Premieres at E3

Square Enix really knows how to string us along, huh? On the heels of such amazing news as the forthcoming release of a new game in the Hitman franchise, and the long-awaited HD remake of Final Fantasy VII, Tuesday saw the reveal of a gameplay trailer for Kingdom Hearts III.

The trailer features two characters sitting in a room playing chess as they discuss “The Ancient Keyblade War.” Afterward we are treated to various bits of gameplay, made mostly of combat for the game. The footage shows off things we have seen before, like the massive Summon-style attacks of Sora’s that seem to mostly be based on iconic Disneyland and Walt Disney World theme park rides. We also see some more of the new skills and abilities Sora will gain through the course of the game, including some gunplay mechanics, and the return of Trinity attacks. It will also be interesting to see if wallrunning will be a common element of the game or simply a part of the particular boss fight we are shown.

If anything, gamers have been waiting for this game just as long as the Final Fantasy VII remake, the previous main title in the franchise having released on the Playstation 2 ten years ago. Two years ago, we saw a few glimpses of the game as Sony and Square were getting audiences hyped for the future of Playstation 4, but it seems the next Kingdom Hearts game is still a ways away. We are told the game is currently “in development” which is about all we were told in 2013. So, maybe we will see this title come out way before they announce Playstation 5. Here’s hoping.

Let us know what you think of the trailer in the comments below, and be sure to stick with Nerdist for more coverage from E3 2015.
