King Jareth Has No Power Over This Hedge Maze Master

Who knew that “professional maze designer” was an actual job and that we’d so desperately wish we knew about it before going into other professions? Well, Adrian Fisher knew, and over his decades-long career has created hundreds of mazes in dozens of countries.

We were introduced to these lush green labyrinths thanks to a recent post on Boing Boing and now need to seek out each and every one of them, or at least the mazes he’s designed in the U.S. The video, by Great Big Story, really seems to capture Fisher’s passion for what he does as he explains his thought process of creating mazes. His awareness of human nature’s drive to figure things out is part of what drives him to make his mazes challenging, but not so hard that people lose their interest.

Fisher doesn’t just deal with hedge mazes, as he’s created them in all manner of materials: stone, wood, water, mirrors. No medium is safe from Fisher’s puzzling mind! You can even sort-of live in one of his creations if you’re so inclined to move to Dubai’s Maze Tower. A few years ago, Fisher did a Tedx talk where (despite him occasionally going off-topic) he spoke beautifully about some of the mazes he’s created and what they mean to him.

Fisher’s mark on the landscape of art (both figuratively and literally) is undeniable and the more we look through the Wikipedia list of his mazes, the more we want to plan a road trip.

Have you solved one of Fisher’s mazes? Let’s discuss in the comments below!
