Killer Pages From Jason Aaron and Ron Garney’s MEN OF WRATH

Marvel has revealed five preview pages from Men of Wrath, the new series from writer Jason Aaron and artist Ron Garney.

The preview, which made its debut over on The Hollywood Reporter, shows the strange origins of the Rath family: how gentle Alabama sheep farmer Isom killed another man in an argument, sending the clan down a 100-year path of bloodshed. In the present day, Ira Rath, whose history of violence has turned him into a cold-blooded hitman. But according to the synopsis accompanying the preview, he might not be able to take on his latest assignment: killing his own son.

Men of Wrath is making its debut through Marvel’s Icon imprint, the publisher’s creator-owned label where series like Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass and Ed Brubaker’s Criminal got their start. And if you haven’t noticed, the line is typically home to a lot of mature-rated titles, so don’t go handing these to your little cousin who loves that crazy Wolverine arc Aaron did that one time.

The label is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, although Marvel – who’s big on the anniversary announcements and celebrations – has mostly been quiet about it. Which is a shame, because some legitimately great books come out of the imprint in both the capes and tights and “other” categories.

The series isn’t Aaron’s first time on the creator-owned rodeo, of course: his Scalped was a critically acclaimed slice of Native crime fiction at Vertigo, and he’s got the brawny badassery of Southern Bastards kicking around at Image. This is the latest collaboration between Aaron and Garney, who worked together on Thor: God of Thunder. Aaron’s new female-led Thor launches this week as well.
