Killer New Board Game is Based on FRIDAY THE 13TH

Normally it won’t kill you to try something new, but when it comes to this awesome sounding new slasher-flick-turned-board game it actually just might. Hey, at least when you get a machete through your belly you will know it was all in good fun.

Last Friday is “a hidden movement, hunt and deduction board game” from Escape Studios that is very much inspired by the Friday the 13th horror movie franchise (though not technically affiliated with it, hence the lack of a date or large monster in a hockey mask). The game is set at a cursed summer camp deep in the woods, where a crazed, undead killer is intent on ruining the weekend for five friends.

Designed by Italian game makers Antonio Ferrara and Sebastiano Fiorillo, the game was first published by Pendragon Game Studio. Now Pendragon is teaming up with Ares Games to bring an English version to America, hopefully by this August.

If you are a fan of the Friday the 13th movies, or of slasher films in general, the description sounds amazing.

Last Friday is about the story of a murderer who died and rose again. In the role of young campers, the players are challenged to survive a long weekend of terror – while one of them takes the role of the undying psychopath hiding in the shadows of the forest.”

The game is for 2-6 players, but the great part is that one person actually plays as the killer, silently hunting the other players around the board. (Which, when you think about it kind of explains why couples having “relations” always end up with a spear between them–they are just so much easier to find in pairs, especially when they are making all sorts of weird noises.)

Gameplay is “divided into 4 chapters full of horror and suspense (Arrival at the Camp, The Chase, The Massacre, and The Final Chapter)” and “each chapter plays out very differently, as the hunter becomes the prey, then comes back from the dead looking for revenge.” You can get a look at some of the art for the game on their Facebook page, which definitely captures that “this is going to be the best weekend ever vibe” of a slasher film… Oh, those co-eds are so, so dead, man.

Horror board games can be a ridiculous amount of fun (Dead of Winter anyone?), and this sounds like an excellent game to use to try and convert some of your reluctant non-board game friends, or even just to rejuvenate the interests of the ones that like a little more excitement in theirs. “Hey, in this game you try to hide from a psychopath so he doesn’t murder you, but even better you don’t need to grow any corn or feed your stupid family.”

Honestly, sometimes you’d rather have your throat slit than be responsible for having enough damn wheat for your ungrateful meeple family.

Who would you rather play as? A counselor or the murderer? It won’t kill you to tell us, so stalk our comments section below and slay us with your answer.
