Kickstarting “Pray For Japan”

Stu Levy, the founder of Tokyopop, has a project for which he’s presently raising money on Kickstarter; Our sibling site GeekChicDaily brought this to our attention, and it’s something in which you might be interested.

It’s called Pray for Japan, and it’s a documentary on the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami in the Tohoku region of Japan. Stu headed over to Ishinomaki, Miyagi after the disaster to volunteer, and then started filming over a period of five weeks, amassing over 40 hours of footage using a Canon 5D. The footage mostly focuses on local volunteers and nonprofits trying to put the area back on its feet. With 90,000 people in shelters with nowhere to return, and hundreds of thousands of people losing their jobs, homes, and even villages.

Stu intends the film to be shown to as many people as possible to help publicize the plight of the people in the region; the plan includes submitting the film to as many festivals as possible for maximum exposure. That costs money, as does post-production, hence Kickstarter. A $5 pledge gets your name in a “special thanks” video, $25 gets you a digital copy of the film with your name in the “special thanks” section of the credits, $50 gets you a DVD, 5 photo prints, a digital copy, and “special thanks” credit, and so on, all the way up to Executive Producer credit, a trip to the Japan premiere, and a tour of the area with Stu for $10,000 or more, in case you, unlike me, are made of money. Stu’s looking to raise $20,000, and with 33 days to go he’s a little short of $9,000.

Don’t know anything about Stu Levy but this sounds like a great idea. Shame there seems to be very little interest here.

…Kickstarter looks like very interesting site. Thanks for the link.

Good cause and I hope for the best but I pray this isn’t another project of Stu Levy that isn’t all about Stu Levy, like Princess AI written by him under the name DJ Milky or Van Von Hunter or America’s Greatest Otaku. I also hope he doesn’t get bored and abandon his efforts like he did his own publishing company Tokyopop and all the talented people who worked there.
