KICK-ASS Screenwriter Jane Goldman to Pen FABLES Movie

While Bill Willingham’s long-running Vertigo Comics series Fables may be coming to an end with March’s issue #150, there is plenty of hope on the horizon for those who aren’t ready to bid adieu to the denizens of Fabletown. Comic Book Resources has an update from producer David Heyman on the progress of the feature film adaptation — namely that it has landed Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class scribe Jane Goldman to pen a draft.

“Jane Goldman is working on a draft as we speak,” said Heyman. “Nik Arcel is attached [to direct]. He did a draft, and now he’s supervising Jane, who’s doing a draft. Hoping that it’ll come in and we’ll be able to move to the next stage. All these things always take longer than you want. And Fables is not easy, by any means, but I think it’ll be pretty great,” he continued.

When asked why he was excited about transforming the comic into a feature film, Heyman gushed. “I’m drawn to stories about outsiders,” he said, “and I think the Fables are outsiders.” The comic follows a group of characters from across global folklore who are forced to flee their homeland after an ancient evil known as The Adversary attacks. Setting up shop in New York City, the Fables, as they are called, establish a neighborhood called Fabletown. This sense of community is part of what attracted Heyman to the project.

“They arrive in a New York City-type place, and how we’re approaching is that they’re people who are all separate, and how they ultimately have to form the community in order to survive,” explained Heyman. “They’re all inhabiting their own little universes within this world. But they have to form this community, and that really appealed to me. And I just think the characters are so vivid. And I also think the farm is, again, it’s very human. That’s what I like. It’s a challenging film.”

Here’s hoping that one of the more memorable moments from Telltale’s video game adaptation, The Wolf Among Us, will make it into the final version.
