KHALEESI Takes Over Nursery; Pop Culture’s Popular Baby Names

When your child tells you they want to invite Arya, Tyrion, Logan, Elsa, Azalea, and Messi to their 4th birthday party, don’t worry about them having delusions of grandeur, it’s just the roll call from class. The 2014 data on baby names in the United Kingdom shows that pop culture remains a fertile ground for finding your kid’s name.

Game of Thrones seems to be one of the more ubiquitous options for both girls and boys. Sansa (6 babies) and Arya (244 babies!) both made the list again, but this year Brienne (4 babies) will be joining them at daycare. However, it is only fitting that the woman with the name so long you need a water break to actually say all of it shows up twice, as Khaleesi (53 babies) and Daenerys (9 babies) both make the cut. Sadly, not one “Mother of Dragons” is to be found in the United Kingdom, and technically in Westeros since she refuses to hurry up and get moving to her homeland so we can sorry, sorry. My bad.

Somehow Theon topped out the Game of Thrones’ boys names (18), even though it feels like you are begging for your child to grow up and get stuck with the moniker “Reek.” Tyrion, Bran, and Sandor also made the list. Being the most honorable man in Westeros wasn’t enough to name one baby “Davos.”

Movies and music also offered up plenty of ideas, with Anna and Elsa (804 and 537 babies, respectively) from Frozen being popular choices, as well as every member of One Direction.

Even the greatest American-export, the Kardashians, will lead to lots of kids being kalled Khloe, Kendall, Kourtney, and Kim for decades to come. That should be fun when they are in class with plenty of girls named after Downton Abbey characters, such as Edith, Cora, Violet, and Rose.

But don’t think it is only the world of entertainment inspiring parents, since little Cora might come home and tell you all about Messi or Ronaldo and how their parents are way into soccer.

Take a look at the whole list to see some of the other names that made the cut and just how popular they are.

Which one of these names could you see yourself naming your child? What other names should be in consideration? (Michael is and always will be a great choice, by the way). Tell us right here in the comments below.
