Kevin Smith Announces MALLRATS 2 Will Shoot in 2016

Nostalgia for the ’90s is in full swing, and no one seems to be feeling it more than writer/director Kevin Smith, who just confirmed that he will indeed be shooting a sequel to his 1995 movie Mallrats in 2016. This would be in addition to Clerks III, which is of course yet another follow up to one of Smith’s beloved early movies from the ’90s.

Smith first tweeted out a not-so-cryptic comment last week regarding a possible sequel to Mallrats, and then confirmed the news while on a morning radio show, saying “Yeah, that’s what we’re working on. It’s half a script right now, and we’re pulling our loot together. We’ve got up until the beginning of 2016. By the time we get to May 2016, we’re going to be shooting. Lately I’ve been doing this thing where I’m like, ‘Do you want to do what’s good for your career, or do you just want to have fun?’ Nobody’s clamoring for a Mallrats sequel, but I would love to make one. It’s been like 20 years.”

The original Mallrats was a box office bomb when it hit theaters in 1995, but quickly became a hit on home video, and helped Kevin Smith solidify his status as the geek guru of the ’90s. It was the the first major film role for actor Jason Lee, who until then was better known as a professional skateboarder.  It will be interesting to see how you could even do a Mallrats sequel in 2016… is there even really a “mall culture” like there was in the ’80s and ’90s anymore? If Brodie and his buddy T.S. are still hanging out at the food court in 2016, that’s even more sad than Dante and Randall working at Mooby’s in Clerks II.

… Perfect.

A sequel 20 years after the original? Everyone knows there’s no second acts in directing— didn’t GODFATHER 3, the Prequels, and CRYSTAL SKULL proved that? And I thought he was too busy angling a DC film to do…I know some people liked CLERKS 2, but I couldn’t get over how ugly everyone looked (they should’ve fired the cinematographer).A sequel to DOGMA— Dogma 2:  The Apocalypse Returns– is something I’d watch, though.

The point you don’t get is the obscure jokes running from film to film.  A joke only I get because I’ve seen all the movies.  Like the ones about Rick Darris or the girl who drowned doing laps at the pool.

    • David says:

The guy who shot Clerks 2 was the cinematographer on all his previous films. I thought the visuals look good.

Is it just me or does this article feel very negative. Considering some of the bad ideas this site has backed wholeheartedly, I am surprised by the complete lack of interest. Maybe if legendary was producing it, I might see a more positive take on this news

Seriously, that last paragraph made me want to reconsider my “shut up take my money!” mindset.

Maybe so, but when I saw the title of the article I said “Oh God…” out loud.
