Kevin Feige Says Marvel’s Phase 4 Films Will Be ‘Very Different’

In just under three weeks, Captain America: Civil War will begin the third phase of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. Of course, Marvel is already looking ahead beyond Phase 3, which will wrap up in 2019 with the second part of Avengers: Infinity War. Marvel’s Kevin Feige has also dropped some hints about what to expect from Marvel Phase 4.

“I think you look at comics as a guide,” said Feige while speaking to Entertainment Weekly. “I think there will be a finality to moments of Phase Three, as well as new beginnings that will mark a different, a very different, a distinctively different chapter in what will someday be a complete first saga made up of three phases.”

Earlier this month, Feige confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was likely to be one of the Phase 4 films. And what else might be on the docket? It’s a pretty safe assumption that barring unforeseen failure at the box office, there should be sequels to Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Ant-Man and the Wasp, in addition to the follow-up film to Spider-Man: Homecoming in Phase 4. Not even Marvel seems to be clear on whether Inhumans will fall in Phase 3 or Phase 4. But if Phase 4 is anything like Phase 3, Marvel Studios will also be introducing new characters into their cinematic universe.

Where does that leave perennial Marvel favorites Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor? You may have noticed that Phase 3 has no solo Iron Man film, and the same could be true for Cap and Thor in Phase 4. However, those three characters are far too popular to remain sidelined forever. Even if Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth eventually decide to move on from the MCU, Marvel will probably recast the roles and relaunch their solo movie franchises.
