With production for the conclusion of Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers: Age of Ultron, well under way, all eyes are now turning to Phase 3 of the MCU, and its first film, set to hit theaters shortly after the Avengers sequel, Ant-Man. Currently, it’s known that Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas will be starring in the film as Scott Lang and Hank Pym, respectively, with Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright set to write (along with Joe Cornish) and direct.

Recently, Empire Magazine caught up with Kevin Feige to get the scoop on the film, and one of the first things addressed was how in the MCU’s world, Stark is able to create Ultron, where his comic-book origins lie with Pym: “It was two things,” said Feige, “a story Edgar wanted to tell that we’ll see with Michael Douglas and Paul Rudd, and now we’re 11 films in, it’s looking at the characters we’ve already introduced who already have the technology and the brains to do… certain things [laughs].”

Basically, the team didn’t want to have to introduce another character just for the sake of getting Ultron to screen.

Feige explained how Wright’s version of the character influenced the creation of the MCU, since Wright’s been on the project since before its creation: “We changed, frankly, some of the MCU to accommodate this version of Ant-Man. Knowing what we wanted to do with Edgar and with Ant-Man, going years and years back, helped to dictate what we did with the roster for Avengers the first time. It was a bit of both in terms of his idea for the Ant-Man story influencing the birth of the MCU in the early films leading up to Avengers.

“Look at that origin of the petty crook who comes into contact with a suit and does his best to make good, and then look at someone like Paul Rudd, who can do slightly unsavoury things like break into people’s houses and still be charming and who you root for and whose redemption you will find satisfaction in.”

Look, this is the studio that’s putting out a movie with a talking raccoon that rocks a machine gun; At this point, this is the least crazy thing they could be doing. But it’s nice to know Feige, Wright and the rest of the team are putting forth their best effort to get the story of Ant-Man right.
