While casting rumors have been all the rage for the second season of HBOâs widely successful anthology drama, True Detective, littleâs been said about next seasonâs slate of directors. One of the things that made the series truly unique was its auteur style; the entire first season used only one writer (creator Nic Pizzolatto) and one director (Emmy winner Cary Fukunaga). That model will not be used in the upcoming year, though, due to time constraints. Pizzolatto has stated that multiple directors will take charge of the seriesâ new season, which is where todayâs report from The Hollywood Reporter comes into play: Fast & Furious head honcho Justin Lin is supposedly in talks to direct two episodes this season.
Though Lin is perhaps most well known for his work on the Fast & Furious franchise, heâs no stranger to the small screen (heâs worked on both Community and the upcoming CBS drama, Scorpion). However, with pre-production already underway on his next film, the still-untitled Bourne sequel, Linâs schedule is pretty tight. If heâs going to hop on to True Detective, itâs got to be soon — which means the rumors of him directing the first two episodes of the season (set to begin production later this month) seem most likely.
What Linâs involvement means for the tone of the series is unclear. True Detective doesnât exactly seem like a show in desperate need of a slick car chase or SFX sequence, but given the anthology nature of the drama, anythingâs possible.
