Justin Lin Is Making a KNIGHT RIDER Digital Series

That Justin Lin sure does like fast cars. After directing four films in the Fast and the Furious franchise, he recently signed on to direct a Hot Wheels movie. But clearly that wasn’t enough. Now, he’s taking on another iconic pop culture automobile, in yet another reboot of the iconic ’80s series Knight Rider. But this reboot won’t be a movie or a TV show—it’s going to be a digital series instead.

Lin’s company YOMYOMF (which stands for “YouOffendMeYouOffendMyFamily”) is partnering up with Machinima, the first global many2many programming service focusing on fandom and gamer culture, together with NBC Universal Brand Development to produce this new digital reboot of the ’80s NBC television series. YOMYOMF and Lin will produce the new digital series that is in active development for a potential 2017 launch date. No word yet on the involvement of original star David Hasselhoff, but c’mon…it’s not really Knight Rider without the Hoff, right?

Machinima’s CEO Chad Gutstein released a statement saying, “Knight Rider is an iconic franchise whose concepts of AI and autonomous vehicles were science fiction in the 1980s and are now science fact. Justin is one of the leading storytellers of his generation and we couldn’t be more excited to work with him on re-invigorating Knight Rider for a new generation of fans.”

The original series ran from 1982-86, and centered around Michael Knight, a high-tech modern crime fighter assisted by KITT, “an advanced artificially intelligent, self-aware and nearly indestructible car.” After the show was canceled, several Knight Rider TV movies followed in the ’90s, and in 2008 a TV reboot aired on NBC, but it only lasted 13 episodes. The original theme song remains super iconic, mostly due to it being sampled by hip hop and EDM artists ad nauseam for over 30 years.

Are you excited for another version of KITT hitting the highways? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
