Just How Much of GAME OF THRONES’ 4th Season Was VFX? Lots.

It should come as a surprise to no one that HBO’s Game of Thrones is heavily reliant on the magic of computer-made visuals. I mean the show is based on a totally made up world where there are not only castles and out of this world landscapes but also dragons and magical beings, so, y’know: it truly does take a village to create it.

In fact it takes more than just one single VFX house to bring the magic to the small screen (see why those season orders are only 10 episodes now?). One such place is Mackevision, a Germany-based worldwide leader in 3D visualization, animation, visual effects, and post-production shenanigans. And if their new reel of work on Thrones is any indication: a heck of a lot of that show was created in post. Whoa whoa whoa.

As evidenced by the clip, a lot of the extraordinary flights of fancy that George R.R. Martin put to page and Dave Benioff and D.B. Weiss endeavor to bring to the screen each season, are built out and added to their environments after the fact. Mackevision themselves worked on moments surrounding (spoilers for season 4, nerds) Ramsay’s elevation to a Bolton, the epic Purple Wedding festivities, and Arya’s escape to Braavos in the finale. On top of that it seems they were tasked with created a lot of the buildings (and even a dragon shadow or two) that add to the series’ grandeur and expanse.

No doubt work like this is what makes the series so expensive to make but absolutely enthralling to watch.

What do you think of the clip? Let us hear your thoughts in the comments.
