The internet is ablaze today with a new video craze starring the one and only Shia LaBeouf. It seems that a couple of months ago, Mr. LaBeouf collaborated with a group of students from the Central Saint Martins BA Fine Arts program in London. The project that Shia worked on involved the actor reading and acting out pieces written by the students in front of a green screen. The reason this video was made is actually much more sane than I first anticipated, but it is the gestures and energy with which LaBeouf shouts “just do it” over and over that are so baffling and magnetic.
That footage was most likely supposed to be used for later projects in the program. However, the raw green screen footage has made it’s way online, and a particular segment of Shia aggressively motivating the viewer has become a favorite piece for video editors all over the web. Take a look at the raw footage above, then check out some of the videos that have come from it.
Not all of the creations that have come from it are great, but videos like LaBeouf arguing with HAL in 2001: A Space Odyssey, or replacing Yoda as Luke Skywalker’s mentor in Star Wars are pure gold. There is even a subreddit dedicated to the video already, because why wouldn’t there be? It is called MotivaShian. The funniest thing about all of this, is the video is actually doing exactly what it was meant to do, just on a grander scale. Now, Shia has provided rough footage for millions of aspiring editors to manipulate and play with. So, in a very weird way, he truly is motivating the world to chase their dreams.
