JURASSIC WORLD 2 Will Be a Parable, Says Colin Trevorrow

Earlier this month, Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow teased that the upcoming sequel would deal with the idea that once the ability to clone a dinosaur existed “you can’t put that back in the box.” Now, Trevorrow has revealed how that plays into the theme of Jurassic World 2, and what it means for the dinosaurs themselves.

During the Sitges Film Festival in Spain, Trevorrow spoke with El Mundo about the larger implications of Jurassic World 2 and the way that humanity treats the dinosaurs. “The dinosaurs will be a parable of the treatment animals receive today,” related Trevorrow. “The abuse, medical experimentation, pets, having wild animals in zoos like prisons, the use the military has made of them—animals as weapons.”

As previously noted by /Film, Jurassic World hinted that the technology to recreate the dinosaurs wouldn’t be proprietary forever. Trevorrow’s latest comments suggest that the dinosaurs will be more fully integrated with the modern world, which may include knock-off theme parks and dinosaur breeding. The inherent cruelty of the abuse and experimentation on the dinosaurs will almost certainly come back to literally bite anyone involved with it.

Trevorrow may be co-writing Jurassic World 2, but this time J.A. Bayona is stepping in as director—a move Trevorrow loves. “The second part will be a very different movie that will explore new paths,” he explained. “For that reason, it was clear that it needed to be Bayona who would direct it, in order to have it grow and evolve with his very personal vision.”

Jurassic World 2 will be released on June 22, 2018.
