New JUMANJI Trailer Taps into Classic Video Game Tropes

Many diehard fans of the original Jumanji were upset when they learned the sequel would feature a video game instead of the board game version we all know and love. But if you’re stuck on how the haunted pastime transformed from tabletop to digital form, the film’s latest trailer has an explanation for you. As it turns out, the game “always finds a way.” And this version might be even more dangerous.

In this all new full length trailer for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which features a lot more of Nick Jonas than the last one, we’re reminded that in a video game how many “lives” you have is just as important to winning as how strong your character is. And just like in real life, if you find yourself in a fight for your life, you’d much rather be The Rock than Kevin Hart.

Note: If a video game (particularly one you’re trapped inside of) specifically lists “cake” as one of your weaknesses, you should probably pay extra special attention to that. In the real world being a little too fond of cake means your waistline balloons up; but in the world of Jumanji it means something far more deadly.

We love the added wrinkle of each player getting “three lives,” since it will mean not every situation the four transported high schoolers find themselves in will end well for them. Also, we can’t help but laughing at the sight of The Rock carrying Kevin Hart on his back now that we know how miserable it was to shoot that scene. Unlike his character in the movie, the real Rock does have at least one weakness: carrying costars around the jungle all day.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle comes to theaters on December 20th.
