Joss Whedon on Why He Probably Isn’t Coming Back For AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR

Earlier, we showed you some brand new Empire magazine covers featuring the cast of Marvel’s upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron. Directed by Joss Whedon, the film is expected to smash (wink, wink) box-office records like so many Hulks while also delivering the biggest Marvel Cinematic Universe experience to date. But, despite Age of Ultron looming large on the horizon, a lot of our talk lately has been the movie that’s going to be following it in 2018, Avengers: Infinity War Part 1.

When last we checked in with the rumor mill of the film, we found ourselves wondering if magic had indeed occurred that would allow Spider-Man to finally play in the MCU. However, before that news broke, there was another rumor circling that gave us some mixed feelings: namely that Joss wouldn’t be returning to the director’s chair for what’s seeming very much like an epic conclusion to the Avengers’ first cinematic trilogy. (Or is it technically a tetralogy?)

In the latest issue of Empire, Whedon had this to say: “I couldn’t imagine doing this again. It’s enormously hard, and it [will] be, by [the time I would make Avengers 3 & 4], a good five years since I created anything that was completely my own. So it’s very doubtful that I would take on the two-part Infinity War movie that would eat up the next four years of my life. I obviously still want to be a part of the Marvel Universe – I love these guys – but it ain’t easy. This year has been more like running three shows than any year of my life. It is bonkers.”

So, if not Joss Whedon, then who? One rumor that has been floating around lately is that Captain America: Civil War directors, The Russo Brothers, are the studio’s top choice to replace Whedon on the two-part Avengers epic, and that the boys are 100% on board to take the job if asked. However, we will say Whedon was making similar – but nearly as definitive – statements after the first Avengers film until he realized he wanted to tell a story with Ultron as the big bad. So, you never know.

At the very least, it’s a good sign Whedon says he doesn’t want to leave Marvel entirely. So perhaps he can remain on the next film as a producer or a writer perhaps. That would be sweet, as would the potential of him taking on a more active role in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., or tackling a new Marvel series entirely. Maybe he can finally give us the Squirrel Girl series that we deserve.

What would you like to see next from Whedon? Let us know in the comments below.

  1. Nick says:

It’s the Squirrel Girl we need, not the one we deserve…

  2. Dave Rice says:

FIrefly. The fans and the universe want more. Whedon does too!

  3. BCSully says:

“Firefly” is definitely an impossibility (as sad as that is to admit) but I would love to see Joss do something, (anything!)  new with the exact same cast in completely different roles. Never been done before and it would rule television for years to come (or at least until some short-sighted, pencil-pushing, manage-by-spreadsheet ignoramus with a complete lack of imagination pulls the plug)

  4. Flash says:

    Dr. Horrible 2!

  5. Simon says:

Firs: a Whedon original, then: RUNAWAYS!

    • Jeremy says:

YES!!!!!!!  A Runaways film helmed by Joss would be spectacular! (especially considering his run on the comic was fantastic.)

  6. Rachel V says:

This post made me sad until the last paragraph which then filled me with dreadful hope. What if… Joss quit the Avengers franchise and was freed up to helm the first female centered super-hero film? (First here meaning: I mean, can you even remember the last one? Seriously? Besides Super Girl?) After what will inevitably be two majorly successful blockbusters in the Marvel universe movies, he might have the required clout to convince the studios to do it. Even better, he would KILL it! We already know that Joss wrote some of the most nuanced, compelling female characters in television history. It makes me tingly all over to think of him leading the charge with a Storm or Jean Grey or (I would curl up in a ball and die) Rogue movie. Obviously he would do an amazing Blackwidow film since he already has experience with the character and his voice would flow naturally from his prior work into the new.
I’ve made myself sad again because the industry has burned my hopes too many times. But it would be amazing.

  7. Louis says:

If he were to take a more direct role in Agents of SHIELD, that’d be great.

  8. jack says:

Give it a rest with Firefly. It’s done.

  9. ALWEX says:

I’d love it if he were to write and direct the Captain Marvel movie.

  10. Jeremy G. says:

    Firefly 2: Electric Bugaloo

  11. Browncoat says:

he has the money and power to get Firefly back….and the fans are hungry for more. Don’t let them take the sky from you, Joss!

  12. Dan Simmons says:

I want to say “Firefly”, but I believe that ship has flown. 🙁

    • Carl says:

Firefly:The Animated Series; it could take place between the show and movie (even flitting further back or forward) and would allow the actors to work around their current schedules, as it would just be voice work. FOX needs to wake up.

    • Browncoat says:

That would be amazing. But sadly will never happen.

    • TJ says:

Almost every member of the cast and whedon has stated in the past that a firefly reboot will almost NEVER happen.  The actors have all gone separate ways, and become deeply involved in other projects.

    • Eva says:

My dream series would be a continuation of Firefly, set in the same universe 10-20 years after Serenity, with a new cast and memebrs of the original one making guest appearances.

    • Shayde says:

Maybe Firefly the ANIMATED series could happen. Only need the voices.

    • stardude says:

I believe that Whedon did do several books in that universe if amazon is to be trusted.
