Well, this is a surprise. During a recent performance for PBS, Josh Groban invited equally talented singer and “pal” Kelly Clarkson to the stage for a gorgeous duet of the ballad, “All I Ask of You,” from Phantom of the Opera. Backed by a live band and wearing their best formal attire, the two singers were flawless–almost as perfect as the original.
Clarkson appeared on Groban’s last album, Stages, which was comprised of Broadway covers. This song appears on that album, and apparently Groban was a tad nervous about asking Clarkson to be involved. As he told Entertainment Weekly, âI was terrified! I thought sheâd say no because sheâs got a hit album and a new baby and such a busy career. But sheâs actually a big Broadway buff. Iâd wanted to sing with her for a while and I thought, Maybe this is crazy, but maybe this is the way to do it, with something people wouldnât expect. And sheâs got pipes.â That she does, along with an electric stage presence.
Josh Groban: Stages Live will premiere on November 28 and will include, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” (The Wizard of Oz), “Not While I’m Around” (Sweeney Todd), “Pure Imagination” (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), among many others.
What do you think of their performance? Would you like to see Kelly Clarkson do a Broadway covers album herself? Are you going to watch Groban’s PBS special? Let us know in the comments below.
