Joseph Kosinski Eyed to Direct Sony’s GRAN TURISMO Movie Adaptation

Gentlemen, start your engines. Now get ready for 45 uninterrupted minutes of staring at a garage as a nameless, faceless protagonist swaps out different carburetors, suspension systems, and brake lights. That, dear readers, is what you can expect from Sony’s big screen adaptation of their long-running Gran Turismo racing game series. Well, that’s what you could expect if I were directing it. Unfortunately, due to creative differences my vision won’t be coming to pass. Rather, The Hollywood Reporter is saying that Oblivion and Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski is in talks with the studio to helm the project.

The thrilling climax of my version of Gran Turismo.

A pet project of Columbia Pictures co-president Michael DeLuca, Gran Turismo is reported to center on a player of the video game who turns into a professional racer, according to lead designer Kazunori Yamauchi. That tidbit may be based on an older version of the script penned by Alex Tse, though, so it could be subject to change. Apparently, Kosinski and Sony are developing a new script for the long-gestating racing movie. In fact, Kosinski spent the last couple years developing a film based on A.J. Baime’s Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari and Their Battle for Speed and Glory at Le Mans as a vehicle (pun intended) for Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. Unfortunately, it stalled out, leaving Kosinski free to shift gears and move on to Gran Turismo. Who knows, maybe he can convince Cruise and Pitt to star in this one? They’ve already got Fassbender for Assassin’s Creed, so why not?

Are you excited by the prospect of a Gran Turismo film? What other video games deserve to be adapted? Let us know in the comments below.
