Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a Very Enthusiastic Drummer

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is capable of just about anything, and we were saying that even before we learned that he also taught himself how to play the drums. He was a guest on Thursday’s episode of The Late Late Show with James Corden, and it was a particularly eventful hour of TV: He gave Corden a forceful and passionate kiss, he found out that his grandfather was the favorite teacher of Bryan Cranston’s brother, and he joined the Late Late Show band on the drums.

He explained to Corden that he would often practice the drums without an actual kit, just working on keeping rhythm with his foot and hands. He lamented earlier that he was a big fan of bandleader Reggie Watts but they’ve never had the opportunity to hang out, so Corden saw an opportunity and encouraged Gordon-Levitt to join the rhythm section of the band.

It turns out that he really knows what to do with drumsticks in his hands, and what he does is play drums very aggressively, like he’s mad at the drum heads and wants nothing more than to destroy them. He really gets into it at 3:10 into the video above, outpacing the band in intensity as Corden throws the show to a commercial break.

His playing style is not unlike Animal from The Muppets, which is fitting since he is currently involved in another Jim Henson project, a Fraggle Rock live action movie that should hopefully be out in the not-too-distant future.
