Jonathan Hickman’s EAST OF WEST and TRANSHUMAN Becoming Amazon Series

Over the past few years, writer Jonathan Hickman has become one of the biggest names in comics, with stellar runs on Marvel’s Avengers, Fantastic Four, and Secret Wars. But aside from his prolific work for Marvel Comics, he’s also created several critically acclaimed series of his own, and now two of those are on their way to the small screen.

According to Deadline, development has begun at Amazon Studios on two hour-long genre drama series, East of West and Transhuman, both based on Hickman series. For both of these shows, Hickman will be working with someone who has had a ton of success bringing his indie comic to television, The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, who will executive produce via his company’s Skybound Entertainment’s first-look deal at Amazon Studios.

Both series will be created and executive produced by Hickman and Nick Dragotta and J.M. Ringuet, the artists on the comics on which both series are based. While East of West will be written by Hickman, they are still looking for a writer to adapt the Transhuman series. East of West is described as “a reimagined Western landscape where America is divided into seven nations. This iconic science fiction series follows “Death” as he braves his fellow riders, monsters, and corrupt gunslingers in his quest to save his mortal family from the Apocalypse.” Meanwhile, Transhuman will be a high concept sci-fi show, centered around around “a divorced couple, who ran rival major corporations, offering humans the ability to genetically and robotically enhance themselves.”

Although Amazon has several successful series, they have lacked any really big, buzzy genre shows like Netflix has with Stranger Things and now Lost in Space. Between spending more money than any studio ever has on a television series with their upcoming Lord of the Rings show, and now their commitment to these Jonathan Hickman projects, it appears Amazon is going to be producing some of the near future’s most interesting big fan-driven shows.
