Jonah Raydio #2: The Next Episode

Steve Agee comes to hang out at Jonah Raydio to talk about Desert Rock, getting into comedy to meet your music idols, and his musical feud with Matt Berry. Also, new stuff by Sundials, a great Turf War demo track, and a crazy story about Arizona’s own “The Blacks”.

  1. Kelly says:

I remember hearing that clip on tumblr (2001 Space Odyssey), and it’s billed as being members of a professional orchestra who each had to pick up the instrument of someone else in the orchestra. So, it was a bunch of professional musicians trying to play an instrument they didn’t know.

  2. Phil says:

The movie you Steve was talking about was “Last American Virgin.” Great soundtrack and dark movie.

  3. Patty Marvel says:

Late to the party, I know, BUT…

Talk about weird instruments, there’s a Joy Division song (I think it’s “She’s Lost Control”) where the beat is kept by spritzing from an aerosol can.

Loved the Devo shout out! Yes those nice boys from Akron, Ohio went to Kent State (here’s the promo video one proud alum made: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBx9xOBNElg ) AND sister Amy Mothersbaugh Roos has her own art studio (Studio 2091) in Cuyahoga Falls. She’s also buds with my mother-in-law, soooo…I’m three degrees from knowing the guys from Devo. I WIN THE INTERNET!!!

  4. RoB says:

yeah I’m looking for that too (legend of zelda) if I find it I’ll post it on here …

  5. Kevin says:

What’s the name of the artist who does the Legend of Zelda rap? It’s not on the tumblr and Google’s not helping because I have no idea how to spell the guy’s name. It’s something like Bowack. Thanks.

  6. ablestmage says:

Pardon — it was “The Seasonings” as a good intro to PDQ Bach, because it’s performed before an audience, and when the audience laughs is a good hint for those who might not have gotten something an orchestra nerd would find hilarious..

  7. ablestmage says:

If you guys liked the 2001 theme, you guys are totally missing out on PDQ Bach, which is a fairly old orchestra-humor album. I would highly recommend The Stoned Guest as a good intro to PDQ Bach, which is loaded with musical jokes that musicians or band/orchestra nerds would get. There’s a play-by-play sports commentary style to Beethoven’s 5th, and several other extremely niche humor bits..

I’m actually thinking the 2001 theme you played might be a professional orchestra deliberately playing poorly, because 10+ years ago I was pretty big into Dr. Demento’s old radio shows because my father had recorded several hours of it on cassette, and there was a professional orchestra who did a few things like that..

  8. Liam says:

I was listening while in the supermarket when the 2001 bit happened and I involuntarily started laughing out loud, got some weird looks from my fellow shoppers.

Awesome to hear the love for Matt Berry, he’s great. One of his songs pops up in the Dredd film, that was odd

  9. Beth Kaelin says:

I’m so glad Jonah got his own podcast. I could listen to his voice all day. Way to go Jonah!

  10. Kaitis says:

This is very quickly becoming one of my all time favorite podcasts. Keep up the great work Jonah & Co!

  12. Garglemesh says:

The Cramps talk bummed me out a bit being a fan, but I loved the rest of it. Especially the Matt Berry stuff, that is priceless. Keep it coming Jonah Ray!

  13. jonah ray says:

  15. Picklemeth says:

“Watch X-Play so we don’t get canceled.”
    “Well, that’ll happen anyway.”
    Yikes…awkward.

  16. Mokoshne says:

The artwork is great and so is Jonah.

  17. Curtis says:

Also, I think that episode 3 should be called “The Episode After The Next Episode”.

  18. Curtis says:

You were talking about the Misfits and it made me think of last Halloween when my buddies from Vendetta Red did a cover band called “The Smithfits” which had the first half of the set with The Smiths songs and the second half with The Misfits songs. It was fucking awesome.

  19. Chuck says:

Love the podcast, could you guys put the song titles in the description to make it easier to find later?

  20. Thiago Spegiorin says:

    Another amazing one!

  21. Clint Osborne says:

A excellent podcast from my favorite of the Nerdist trio. I love hearing about new GOOD music. Any chance of getting this on Stitcher? That is my main source for podcasts but I will go anywhere if the pod is awesome like this particular one. Keep up the great work. Mahalo.

  22. Jordan says:

Thank you Jonah Ray, for playing the failed 2001: Space Odyssey theme. That is the greatest thing ever.

  23. Tzvi says:

The podcast art is great! Will there be tshirts with the different arts on them?
