Jonah Ray Invited to Host MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 Update

This is any comedy fan’s dream, and surely it’s a dream for the person in question. Last week, we told you about Joel Hodgson launching a Kickstarter campaign to bring back Mystery Science Theater 3000. They need at least $2 million in order to make three new episodes, with as many as 12 promised if $5.5 million is reached. As of now, they’ve raised a little over $1.8 million, but a new announcement might push some things in the right direction.

In the initial announcement, Joel promised there would be a new host and new mad scientists, but nobody was named. On the Kickstarter page this morning, however, Joel proclaimed his intention that, should the campaign reach its goal, he intends to invite comedian and Nerdist family member Jonah Ray to be the new host. Joel, Mike, and now Jonah! It’s an amazingly cool thing to happen to such a huge fan of the show. If you listen back to when Joel was on the Nerdist Podcast in 2012, you can hear Jonah get giddy about the show and what it meant to him. How cool!

In a statement, Joel said the following of Mr. Ray:

I can’t really tell you what kind of host Jonah is going to be, but I hope you’ll give him a chance to show you. And even if you’re familiar with Jonah’s career, remember: that doesn’t mean he’ll bring the same exact approach to MST3K. I think a lot of you may be surprised. Plus, like the previous members of our cast, I think Jonah has great instincts and a lot of range. He’s funny, he’s wicked smart, and like I said, his heart’s in the right place. He loves MST3K, he seems to understand what makes it so special, and most important, I know he takes the role seriously.

The keen-eyed and eared out there might have already realized that Jonah was the silhouette and voice in the Kickstarter video, so that was like an Easter egg before we knew there was one. There’s a longer message from Joel on the page, if you’d like to read it, along with a video of Joel announcing Jonah as his choice for next host, where he’d play fictional version Jonah Heston. They’re going to need a pretty tall jumpsuit.

So, now it’s up to us, Nerdist friends! We’d all like to see Jonah alongside Crow T. Robot and Tom Servo on the new, updated Satellite of Love, right? If you haven’t already, maybe visit the Kickstarter campaign and think of donating. We want at least three Jonah eps, but hopefully a lot more.
