Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert Sing About Voting on Election Day

For many of us this election season, not having Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert manning the desks at The Daily Show and on the Colbert Report feels wrong, and more than that, in lieu of this presidential election, like the biggest lost opportunity in political comedy history. But last night, on the eve of the big day, the two former Comedy Central satirists came together on Colbert’s CBS’ Late Show to sing a musical number about why we should all vote, even if it seems like we don’t really have to.

This election eve musical number started when a poor street urchin interrupted Colbert to tell of her fears about voting. Colbert invited her up on the stage, sang a short old-timey tune about the importance of casting a ballot, and that seemed like the end of it. However, that brought out Stewart, bearing toffees from “an old man’s pants,” who sang a song about not voting at all.

Clearly, both comedians feel pretty strongly about the matter, considering the fact that Colbert let Stewart spit water in his face (twice) to make the point. With the importance of voting itself constantly being called into question and everyone having an existential crisis about the democratic process itself, it didn’t hurt that the current lead of Hamilton, Javier Muñoz, came to the stage in costume to set everyone right about not “throwing away your shot.”

Thank goodness, because like Colbert and Stewart finally realized, “the time is now.”
