Johnny Depp is in Talks to Play THE INVISIBLE MAN

Universal is moving full steam ahead with their planned shared universe/reboot of their classic movie monsters. First it was announced that Tom Cruise was going to be starring in a remake of The Mummy, and now it’s being reported that Johnny Depp is in talks to play The Invisible Man in a remake of the classic novel by H.G. Wells. The movie doesn’t have a director attached yet, or a release date, but the script is being written by Men in Black and Now You See Me screenwriter Ed Solomon.

The original version of The Invisible Man starring Claude Rains was released in 1933—hot on the heels of the studios’ double mega success with Dracula and Frankenstein—and was directed by legendary and eccentric director James Whale. It helped solidify Universal as the home of gothic horror, creating cinema’s first “shared universe” that lasted nearly twenty years.

This new version of a connected Universal Monsters universe is being spearheaded by producers Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan, in the hopes of creating the kind of shared cinematic universe with which Marvel has had so much success, and Warner Brothers is attempting to do with their DC Comics properties. It seems, with the casting of Depp and Cruise, they are banking on star power as much as they are name brand recognition. A smart move, as many younger moviegoers are probably familiar with the classic Universal Monsters as Halloween decorations and not much else. It’s unknown if last year’s Dracula Untold will be part of this shared universe or not.

Nerdist has reached out for independent confirmation on this casting news, but had yet to hear back at the time of publication. We will update you as we know more, so stay tuned!
