John Oliver Turns Mean YouTube Comments into Compliments

Even if you’ve somehow managed to avoid all contact with the internet up to this precise point, having just now emerged from a decades-long stint in an underground survival bunker to greet the contemporary world, only to be rushed instantaneously to the nearest available personal computer to be introduced to modern technology by way of what reigns here in the future as the dominant branch of journalism, you’ve no doubt already undergone passage through more than anyone’s share of militant and vile YouTube comments. They’re everywhere. They’re unavoidable. And they’re often tough to shake off. That is, unless you’ve got the caliber of denial exhibited by the great John Oliver.

Hardly unaccustomed to playing the target of internet takedowns, Oliver decided to bring a few of his favorite derogatory YouTube comments to the public eye on the most apropos medium: YouTube. Oliver ran through comments that insulted his appearance, the quality of his television show Last Week Tonight, and even his bias in choosing which mean YouTube comments to read in the segment.

A good laugh from beginning to end, the video does indeed remind us to take even the harshest blows in stride, as it is far more constructive to find humor in the hot, hateful rancor of digital comments sections than it is to thrust yourself full-force into the storming fury. If we can all remember to handle diatribes about our writing, opinions, and appearances as merrily as John Oliver deals with the comparison of his likeness to a certain Muppet scientist, then I think we’ll be all the happier for it.

So good luck to you, newcomer to this realm. May you find the humor even in the sharpest evisceration of your eyebrow thickness.
